Diego Rivera painting "Rivera aromatica

In 1949 the Mexican painter Diego Rivera painted "Vendedora de flores". The painting currently kept at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid is painted in oil on a canvas measuring 180 cm high by 150 cm.

The artist Amaury Dubois, passionate about Mexico, had fun reworking Rivera's painting in his own way. He discovered this work, which served as a poster, during an exhibition "Mexico Europe" at the LAM (Lille Metropole Museum of Modern Art, Contemporary Art and Art Brut) in 2004.

The oil painting, on a canvas slightly smaller than that of Diego Rivera, takes up the general composition and the colors of the original work. The Artist makes a very colorful figurative painting, while taking up in his own way the characters and the spirit of the painting, giving it an aesthetic and spiritual dimension completely new.

Like Diego Rivera, the characters surround the saleswoman who seems to be a Madonna. They help her by making the bouquets of arums with stiff and heavy stems. The woman carries a huge bouquet on her back, held by a belt of fabric, and in her arms a bouquet held by the young girl sitting in front of her.

But in Amaury Dubois' painting, the light is in the heart, it emerges from the hands of the two women who are reaching out to each other, from the bouquet of arums held by the flower seller, from the belt that has been transformed into a huge heart on her chest. This light seems to push back into the shadows a head that screams and resembles that of Munch's character "the scream". Thus life pushes back death, friendship pushes back anguish...
