SHINE A LIGHT
Report
Here is a work that deserves to have a few lines devoted... "Shine a Light" is an extraordinary triptych, and these words are carefully chosen! A Dantesque work in XXL formats of 3m20 by 1m30 for a Belgian collector who loves travelling, a passion he shares with Amaury Dubois. This triptych, executed in the manner of the famous Flemish painters, presents the theme of Sicily, a wild island of Italy nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. Like a chapter, each panel presents a facet of Sicily. The picture as a whole tells a story, the story of the four elements that make up our world. An allegorical representation of the meaning of life, in brief ...

Earth or birth : In the beginning the earth... Represented on the left panel, in the natural axis of reading, it is symbolized by the fig tree. A tree that has its source (of inspiration) in a fertile land (of ideas). Also considered as a messianic tree, the fig tree announces good news, especially with the symbolism of baptism, where the tree bathed in its source feeds into the water that is the precursor of life.  It is, indeed, one of the first Moraceae to bloom in its season. A sense of renewal in a desert landscape, which is sometimes hostile to its coming. When nature (re)takes its rights at all costs and shows us the way...

Air, fire, life... : The middle pane shows two other essential elements of life: air and fire represented by a blazing sun overlooking the view. One notices yet again a reference to Christ in the presence, at its centre, of a church stained by the light of this fireball. A new translation of the meaning of life, a theatre of events both happy and dramatic...

The water at the edge of an uncertain death: on the right, finally, we can see an impressive view of the Sicilian coast. A dream-like panoramic view dotted by a translucent sea, the apparent source of life. However, other evidence suggests another fate... In the foreground, there is the world of plants with another species of fig tree belonging to the family of Cacti: the prickly pear. A reference to hostile territory littered with thorny plants, like the Holy Crown of Christ, and with hearts ripped out like in the Aztec traditions. An oxymoronic symbol hesitating between life and death, between lush nature and the suffering of the crucifixion. A shared feeling reinforced by the presence of the Moon, which is both the celestial body of the dead and the announcer of a new cycle. Finally, one can distinguish volcanic regions spitting their ashes to heaven, which immediately fall into the salt water, which in turn feeds into life. Eternal renewal...

With the work "Shine a Light" Amaury Dubois takes the impossible challenge of synthesis. He shares with us in just three volumes the complex vision of the world around us. What appeared as an idyllic landscape with rich colours hides a more complex reality through the power of symbols. This oil painting on canvas is a book. Like a timeline, over its pages, over its panels, one can find the irremediable cycle of life: being born dust (first panel) to return to dust (last panel). From life to death, it is only one step. From death to life, everything is eternal renewal. Every day we walk on a wire. The fragile wire where it only takes one moment. A precious thread that reminds us of the vital breath of life. Carpe diem
